The Last Word

The provenance on this is a little murky, but most mixologists agree that it was invented at the Detroit Atheletic Club in 1919. Clearly, there was a dearth of exercise going on, because after one of these, you’d be passed out on the gym floor. It fell into obscurity until the early 2000s. I have to admit, just looking at this recipe makes my teeth ache.

Serves two:

  • 1-1/2 oz #3 London Dry Gin (or Tanqueray if you’r slumming it.

  • 1-1/2 oz green Chartreuse

  • 1-1/2 oz maraschino liqueur

  • 1-1/2 oz fresh-squeezed lime juice

  • Garnished with a lime wheel. Some recipes recommend a brandied cherry, but I think this baby is sweet enough.

Chill a coupe glass. Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and shake like hell for around 10 seconds until well chilled. Strain through a fine-mesh strainer into the glass. Garnish.
