The French 75

The French 75

This has its roots back to 1915 in Paris (allegedly) and is named for a 75 mm French field gun. Substituting cognac for gin is called a French 95, and substituting bourbon for gin is called a French 95. I can see cognac for colder weather, and gin for spring and summer. And bourbon? Never.

Serves two:

  • 2 oz gin

  • 1 oz fresh lemon juice

  • 1 oz simple syrup

  • 4 oz sparkling wine, or champagne or prosecco, and a twist of lemon.

Chill shaker and champagne flute. Add 2 oz of sparkling beverage to the flute. Fill the shaker with ice, add liquor, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Shake like hell. Strain contents into a highball glass, and add a twist of lemon.
